Biography

from biography at https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/28855592/clarissa-hulda-waymire

Second wife of John Abram Waymire. Clarissa and John married March 15, 1838 in Logansport, Cass County, Indiana. Clarissa's second middle name is not often used but on occasion she is found as Clarissa T. Albro Waymire; the initial "T" is for Thankful.

From the text, "The Quest for John Rudolph Waymire" which is a compilation of Waymire family genealogy, published by the Waymire Family Research Council in 2005, the researchers wrote the following re Clarissa, page 5-25: "Clarissa's parentage has been difficult to determine. The name is sometimes spelled ARBO (and not ALBRO) but that is most likely because of pronunciation." The compilers further state that Clarissa's maiden name may have been ALBAUGH, and make note of a family from Montgomery County, Ohio. It is still a question waiting for an answer.

Clarissa and John had 13 children and she was, according to her stepdaughter, Louisa Jane (Waymire) Ham, a devoted stepmother. (Louisa was the daughter of John's first wife, Harriet Clark.) Sadly it was during the birth of her 13th child, that Clarissa failed to survive as did the unnamed infant. They both died the same day, September 14th 1869. The names of her other children are as follows: Elvira, Clarissa, Narcissa, Minerva, Phebe, Frederick, John, Miranda, Sarah, Emmaline, Sarah Ellen, and Nellie.

(note: After the death of Clarissa, John did remarry for the third time and fathered two additional children: Margaret and Walter Rae Waymire.)

There are few stories about Clarissa in the newspaper articles of the time or in the current history of the era. However, there is one story that has survived and has been reprinted in various media. It is the story of when John and Clarissa owned a general store or mercantile in the community of Dallas, Polk County. Since paper goods were scarce, John had a practice of keeping track of his accounts receivable by writing his "ledgers" on the back wall of the store. One afternoon while John was away, Clarissa decided to give the store a through cleaning and white-washed the walls, erasing all of John's accounts! Later on she was remorseful but was encouraged that John would remember who owed what. He said that he probably could remember but added that if he did not, then he would add a "bit" to those who were better able to pay!".

Clarissa was buried at Dallas Cemetery with a headstone that reads simply, "Clarcy Waymire wife of J Waymire". Later, when John's body was moved from Lee Mission to Dallas Cemetery, and buried next to Clarissa, a taller tombstone was erected with both her and John's name on the pillar. She, therefore, has two tombstones at the cemetery.
