JOHN ARBUTHNOT. Baptized Kincardineshire 29 April 1667. Died Hampstead 27 February 1734/5. Buried St James's, Piccadilly. Will proved 12 March 1735. MD (St Andrews 1696). Physician-in-ordinary to Queen Anne and had considerable influence at Court. "What time is it, Dr Arbuthnot? "Whatever it please, your Majesty." In 1714, formed with Swift, Pope, Parnell and Gay a brilliant group called "the Scriblerus Club" in the literary revival of that period. Also a friend of Bolingbroke. Known (from his "History of John Bull") as inventor of the character of "John Bull" as typifying the English. He and Pope wrote the text of Handel's opera "Esther" (1718). Suffered from asthma. Guardian to Peter the wild boy on his first arrival in London. Married 1702 MARGARET, whose maiden name was probably WEMYSS (died 3 May 1730).
John was a Scottisch physician and writer.[1]
He died on 27 February 1735.[1]
