Sir John Charles Ardagh KCMG KCIE CB, was an Anglo-Irish Major-General of the British Army, who served as a military engineer, surveyor, intelligence officer, and colonial administrator.
John was born in 1840 the second son of William Johnson Ardagh (1798-1872), vicar of Rossmire, County Waterford, and Sarah Cobbold, of Ipswich.
On 18 February 1896 Ardagh married Susan, the widow of the 3rd Earl of Malmesbury and the daughter of John Hamilton of Fyne Court, Somerset.
In 1896 this quietly spoken, lanky Waterford man was made major-general and director of the British Military Intelligence Department.[1]
He passed away in 1907.
