Umfuli, in a letter to his parents from Durbanon December 23rd (1899), says: "The excitment here at times , when is very great, especially last Sunday we arrived, as they had just received news of that big fight at Colenso, in which we lost so many men. They all say that we have not got nearly enough men out here, and we have gravely underestimated the Boer's strength and fighting abilities. There are hundreds here in Durbanwho would give anything to be out of this and home in the old country - people who have had to leave all they possess and fly for refuge. I have seen three troopships arrive and land their brave fellows, but it must shake their nerves a bit , as they pass the hospital ships lying here with hundreds of wounded on board."
