He married Alberta Mitchell in the Primitive Methodist Church, Emu Bay, Tasmania, on 26 April, 1901.[2][3] He left her in about 1905, and she filed for divorce in 1911.[4] He did not appear in court, and the divorce was granted in 1912.[5][6]
In 1908 he had a son with Eda Eleanor May Thistleton. They do not appear to have married, but lived as a married couple.
He died at Casino, NSW, in 1950,[7][8] and was interred in the East Lismore Cemetery.[9][10]
The death occurred at Casino yesterday morning of Mr. John Spencer Owen, of Mallanganee, aged 70 years. Mr. Owen had lived at Mallanganee for the past 15 years, and had resided on the Richmond and Clarence Rivers for the past 42 years. Three sons, Messrs. J. L. Owen (Mallanganee), A. E. Owen (Rock Valley), and A. K. Owen (Mallanganee), and two daughters, Mrs. D. Suffolk (Blue Knob) and Mrs. H. Brenton (Casino) survive. A son was killed in New Guinea in the last war. The funeral will leave the Lismore Methodist Church today after a service commencing at 1.45 p.m. for the Lismore cemetery.

John appears to have dropped his surname of Armitage after leaving Alberta, and was afterwards known as John Spencer Owen.
