William was born in 1873 in Bradford, West Yorkshire England. He was the fifth of seven children born to George and Ann (Furness). William lived with his parents in Horton, Borough of Bradford, West Yorkshire, until his marriage to Lily Vosper on July 31, 1897. They were married at Saint Stephen Church in Bowling, Bradford.

William and Lily continued living in Bradford. They welcomed three children between 1900 and 1910. In 1914, the family decided to leave England for America. They arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA on August 10, 1914 aboard the ship Haverford out of Liverpool, England. Ships papers list William's sister, Mary Hannah as "friend", or sponsor. Mary Hannah had arrived in Philadelphia four years earlier in 1910.

Sometime between their arrival in 1914 and 1920, the family had relocated to Pawtuckett, Rhode Island. William remained in Rhode Island until his death on March 8, 1938. He is buried at Moshassock Cemetery in Central Falls, Providence County, Rhode Island. His wife Lily passed two years later in 1940 and is buried with William.
