Mary Elizabeth Arnold was born 13 September 1830, in Hopkinton, Rhode Island. She was the daughter of Gorton Whitman Arnold (1790-1859) and Nancy Brown (1796-1871). [1] [2][3]
In the 1850 census Mary (age 19) was living in Richmond, Washington, Rhode Island with her father Gorton (age 59), her mother Nancy (age 54), and her siblings: John (age 22), Francis (age 21), Nancy (age 16), Joseph (age 14), and Susan (age 9). [4]

Mary married Amos Nichols on 5 September 1853. The couple had no children of their own, however they raised four children: Charles, Lily, Lucy and Willis. Charles and Lily were children of relatives, but Mary and Amos adopted Lucy and Willis.
In 1860, Mary (age 29) and Amos (age 30) were lving in Hopkinton, Rhode Island with Amos' brother Silas (age 23), Lillian Nichols (age 1) and Charles D Nichols (age 12). [5]

Mary Elizabeth Arnold Nichols died 16 March 1896, and is buried in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Hopkinton, Rhode Island. [8][9]
