The Late Mr E. W. Arnold
Mr E. Wilhelm Arnold, Greenock, aged 81, who broke his hip as result of a fall at his home on October 7, died in Kapunda Hospital on Friday. About 30 years ago he was standing in a waggon when the horses set off suddenly and he was thrown onto his back, injuring his spine. He had been an invalid ever since, enduring much pain. He was born at Neuendorf, in Germany, on August 7, 1856, being the younger son of the late Mr and Mrs J. G. Arnold.
He was about 11 when he came to Australia with his parents, who lived between Nuriootpa and Greenock, eventually settling at Gnadenfrei. For six years he worked on a farm at Bethel, and on September 4, 1884, he married Miss Caroline Louise, fourth daughter of the late Mr and Mrs A. Wenke, Bethel; the late Pastor L. A. Jacobi officiating in Bethel Church. Mr Arnold had acquired a farm at Green ock in 1883, and here the couple spent the whole of their married life.
There was a long cortege at the funeral conducted by Rev. J. H. S. Heidenreich in Greenock on Sunday; Messrs J. Kalleske, C. Schultz, H. Koch, J. Helbig, A. Geier and F. Laucke being the bearers. Surviving with Mrs Arnold is a family of four sons and six daughters; Messrs Rudolph (Adelaide), Albert (Halbury), Will (Ardrossan) and Alf (Greenock); Mesdames W. Anderson (Kapunda), P. Matthias (of Adelaide), C. Linke (Bethel), A. Dutschke (Arthurton), A. Schwarz (Kersbrook) and Miss F. Arnold (Greenock). Mr C. Arnold, Marananga, is a brother.
