Daniel Arnold, son of Samuel B. and Mary (Phillips) was born at Wells County, Indiana on 5 September 1846 and died at Montpelier, Blackford County, Indiana on 3 August 1930.[1] He is buried at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Montpelier.[2] Daniel has a biography that was written in 1896.[3] The biography states that he was born in Jackson Township, Wells County, Indiana. His grandfather was Samuel Arnold, who died at Summit County, Ohio in 1846. It also states he married Henrietta, the daughter of Dr. William T. and Sarah A. (Putnam) Shull, and had the following children:

Minnie Arnold, born 16 August 1871, wife of Mr. John P. Boyd, lawyer of Montpelier
Herbert Arnold, born 3 June 1878, living with his aunt Mrs. Mary Turner
Daniel Arnold married Henrietta Shull at Blackford County, Indiana on 27 June 1868.[4] After her death, Daniel married second Hattie Devore at Blackford County, Indiana on 12 August 1880.[5]
Daniel's, aka "Uncle Dan", obituary states he is survived by his sons William Arnold and Herbert Arnold of Montpelier, Mrs. Minnie Boyd of Bucyrus, Ohio, and Mrs. Mary Soule of Brooklyn, New York.[6]
Daniel volunteered in the Civil War as a private in the 138th regiment of the Indiana Infantry. He enlisted prior to being 18 years old. His injury sustained while serving in Tennessee would affect him all his life. His military file is 125 pages.[7] He was treated by Dr. William T. Shull and Dr. Calvin Q. Shull. Daniel wrote letters to his family during the war, and the letters still survive and are archived at the University of Kentucky.[8]
