Birth

Ralph Assheton, 1st Baron Clitheroe was born on 24 February 1901. He was the son of Sir Ralph Cockayne Assheton, 1st Bt. and Mildred Estelle Sybella Master.[1]

Marriage

He married Hon. Sylvia Benita Frances Hotham, daughter of Frederick William Hotham, 6th Baron Hotham of South Dalton and Eliza Benita Sanders, on 24 January 1924.[2] They had 4 children:

  2. Bridget Assheton who married William John Marcus Worsley ( the brother to the Duchess of Kent)
  3. Sir Ralph Assheton, 2nd Baron Clitheroe
  4. Nicholas Assheton

Education

He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1923 with a Master of Arts (M.A.) He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1925 entitled to practice as a barrister.

He was a member of the London Stock Exchange between 1927 and 1939.

He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Lancashire in 1934.
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Rushcliffe between 1934 and 1945.
He held the office of Parliamentary Private Secretary between 1936 and 1938, to the First Commissioner of Works and the Secretary of State, Colonies.
He held the office of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour between 1939 and 1942.
He held the office of Finance Secretary of the Treasury between 1942 and 1945.
He held the office of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Supply between February 1942 and December 1942.
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for the City of London between 1945 and 1950.
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Blackburn West between 1950 and 1955.
He held the office of Vice-Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire between 1956 and 1970.
He held the office of High Steward of Westminster in 1962.
He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire between 1970 and 1976.
