Biography

He may be the James Atkins who was a soldier in King Philip's War in 1675, a resident of Braintree. Savage's Genealogical Dictionary states that this James by wife Margaret had a son James born in Feb 1683 that died at the age of one year. Then they had another James born 31 Mar 1684, and after that no more is heard of him. But the family of our James and Margaret Atkins begin having children at Sandwich in 1690, so it seems reasonable to believe that they are the same family. Savage does not mention the Sandwich family in his work, so apparently did not discover them in his research.

If this is the same man than the approximate birth date of 1672 used here is obviously not correct, and it would more likely be no later than 1657 - assuming he was just 18 when he became a soldier in 1675.
