Phillip Atkinson was born about 1783[1] in County Sligo, Ireland. His parents are unknown, but his mother's surname is believed to be Burke. He married Anne Leech on or about 15 May 1811 in the Killala & Achonry Diocese, Killala, County Mayo, Ireland.[2] They had six sons in Ireland before emigrating to the United States. Phillip and his son Robert arrived in New York on the ship Howard on 4 Mar 1834, having sailed from Liverpool, England, on or about 8 Jan 1834; his occupation is listed as "Gentleman."[1] On 10 Oct 1840, Phillip and his sons Lewis and Charles purchased 80 acres of land under the Congressional Land Act of 24 April 1820.[3] On the same day, he purchased another 80 acres of adjoining land,[4][5] followed by a third purchase of 40 acres of adjoining land on 3 Nov 1840,[6] for a total of 160 acres (1/4 square mile). Phillip died on 21 Oct 1849 in Brimfield Township, Peoria County, Illinois.
