Patrick Auld was born in 1795[1] in Carnmoney, County Antrim. He may have been the son of one Thomas Auld.[2]
The land he farmed at Ballyhowne,[3] and passed on to his children forms a self-contained plot within the 1848-64 Griffith Valuation (Patrick may have died before his land was assessed). The land remains in the possession of his descendants today going through Josias (1866) to James (1884) to James (1914) to Robert (1953) and Robert's children.[4]
He married Martha Stewart in 1803 at Carnmoney Presbyterian Church.[5] They had 9 children including James (1805), Robert (1819) and Martha (1822)[6]
He passed away in 1866[7] and his wife Martha passed away just a few months later. The farm passed on to third son Josias. Eldest son Thomas had emigrated with his family in 1846, and second son James raised a large family and was living at Monkstown (a short walking distance from Ballyhone).[8]
Patrick is buried in Carnmoney Presbyterian Church Cemetery beneath a headstone erected by his son Josias, but we only know this because of the transcription copied into David Walton Auld's "The Auld Book" published in 1978 (see below). The stone has not been located or indexed by modern grave-record websites, even assuming it's still readable or even still there.
Three of the (currently) four records on Patrick's Familysearch relate to his death, and the other one to taxes. However it does confirm the presence of land on the Ballyhowne (Ballyhone) townland in Patrick's lifetime. It's theoretically possible it isn't the same farm in the Griffith Valuation and in the family today, but the more plausible scenario is that Patrick had been a tenant farmer for some time, and perhaps his father before him, tied to the Auld farm that is still farmed by Aulds today.
Because this is the furthest Auld ancestor of mine in which I have total confidence, and it is Patrick's brothers and sisters that are subject to conflicting claims, I'll use this page as a staging point for untangling the different Carnmoney branches. Rootschat has the following Auld couples active in Carnmoney Baptism records at the start of the 1800s (excludes unnamed Auld wives, and I've taken Patrick and Martha as given):
Some of these may be Patrick's siblings and children, or nieces and nephews. Others will be cousins who share a grandfather with Patrick (or beyond). I'll try and match them up as I dot around the tree.
