Emery was born in 1896, the son of George Austin and Susan Malinda Davis. His siblings were Jessie (female), Jay, Charlie, Harold "Harry", Mabel Ruth, Myrtle and Dollie and two children who died in infancy. He was sometimes known as "Grinnie" to his friends. His father died in 1915.

During WWI, he was deployed with the AEF to France with the 137th regiment. His two brothers Charlie and Harry were also deployed with other outfits.
After returning home, he married Carrie Van Voorhis, daughter of Will Van Voorhis in 1921. This was a double wedding with Gladys Melott and Ralph Fahrmeyer. He had several children with Carrie.
In 1951, he married Marie O. Wilson of Kansas City.

Miss Van Voorhis is the daughter of Will Van Voorhis and for the last several years has been making her home in this vicinity at the James Bollinger home. The young bride is held in highest esteem and well-liked by all who know her. She is a senior in the Robinson high school and will continue her school work. Mr. Austin is one of Robinson's progressive young men and of highest character. Mr. Austin is liked by everyone and cheerfully responds to “Grinnie" when addressed by young or old. During the World War he responded to the call and enlisted in Co. F. and with his company went to Ft Sill, where he spent a year in training, going overseas spent a year.' He served on 6 different, battle fronts, coming out without receiving a scratch, although he can tell some stories that makes your hair stand on end! He served with the 35th division - in the Argonne and St; Michael and served other fronts on the offensive. After being discharged he returned home and has been employed in the Robinson Meat Market. The young couple at present are making their home with the groom’s mother, Mrs. George Austin. Miss Mellott is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. 0 Mallott of near Robinson and is one of Robinson’s popular young ladies. Miss Mallott was a senior in the Robinson high school, and will be greatly missed, especially by the basketball team, on which she played jumping center. Mr. Fahrmeyer is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Fahrmeyer and has resided in Robinson for a number of years. He is a highly respected citizen and will no doubt make a success whatever business he undertakes. At present the young couple are staying with the groom’s uncle, Mr. and Mrs. C. E.
