John Auten / Aten was born on 10 June 1765 near Easton, Northampton, Pennsylvania.[1]His parents were Hendrick Aten and Mary Bellas.[2]
He was born near Easton, Pennsylvania. He traveled up the Susquehanna River to Chillisquaque Creek. There he found the location for his home, barn, and grist mill, six miles east of Milton, Pennsylvania, but only two miles from Danville, PA. It has been told that John J. added the "U" to Aten.[3]
"Here is a story of John J. Auten; I don't know how true it is, but the same story came from many different sources. John J. traveled up the Susquehanna River to Chillisquaque creek, where he located a place on which to build a home and grist mill. John J. Aten chose a 300 acre tract of land, 6 miles east of Milton, Pennsylvania where he built in the wilderness a log cabin, a barn with a thatched roof, and a flour mill which he operated for 40 years. The story goes that a helper, an Irishman, who printed the flour sacks added the u to the name Aten so people would pronounce it correctly. (1 of the stories of why some spell it Auten.")[4]
He helped build the first church in Chilisquaque which was a log structure. [5]
He died in 1840.[6]
A revolutionist, he did not take up the Loyalist side as did his in-laws.
