Biography

Joseph was born about 1735, most likely in Northampton County, NC. He was the son of William Avent and Sarah Massey. He married Julia Ann, who's last name is unknown. He was in Chatham County by 1761[1]. He moved with, or was joined a few later, by a group of families from Northampton County, including his brother John Avent. He entered land on Lick Creek adjoining Joseph Hinton in Chatham in 1779[2]. The survey was done in 1780, John Chapman and Matthew Parham were the chain carriers. He was the chain carrier for the survey of Philip Jean's land on Lick Creek that same year. He served in the Revolutionary War in the North Carolina Militia. where he was issued a pay voucher by the state of North Carolina in January of 1781[3]. He passed away about 1781[4].

  • Feb1761 Orange County - Ordered that the following persons be appointed to lay out a road.. from the county line near Andrew Shepard's to Henry Braswell's and thence to the Johnston County line - Richard Cheek, Joseph Evans (Joseph Avent), Sampson Williams, Valentine Braswell, William Yarborough, Joseph Mims, Robert Jones, Charles Brum (Broom), Randall Cheek, John Booker, Henry Braswell, John Bohannon, Thomas Saymore, Richard Braswell, Wm Braswell, Isaac Cooper, James Stringfield, & William Cone. Sampson Williams was named overseer on south side of the river, Richard overseer on the north side of the river[1].
  • May 1765 Orange (Now Chatham) Co., NC - The jury appointed to lay out a road from William Braswell's Ferry on Cape Fear to Hamilton's Store on Crabtree Creek: David Chapman, Richard Cheek, Burwell Williams, Joseph Avent, Robert Jones, Drury Mims, John Tally, Henry Day, Volintine Braswell, William Asley, Samuel Jetman, Thomas Seamore, and Henry Braswell.[5]"
  • May 1769 - Richard Cheek came into court and proved by the oath of Joseph Avent that his right ear was bit off by Henry Braswell sometime in August last[6].
  • August 12th, 1779 The order of the last court for laying out a road from Mathew Drakes old store to the county line be renewed and that any twelve of the following persons be a jury to lay the same out Viz. Joseph Brantley, Abner Hill, Isaac Mathis, Henry Braswell, John Chapman, Joseph Avent, Richard Bohannon, John Wommack, Frederick Cobb, John Burt Sen'r, William Ragland, Moses Durden, John Avent, Thomas Griffis, Richard Worthen, David Champman Jr, Benjamin Chapman, Thomas Partridge, Burwell Williams, and Philip Jane[7].
  • Feb 11, 1782 - "Know by all men of those presence that I July Ann Aven, Philip Brantley, James Parham are held and firmly bound into the worshipful court of said county in the just and full sum of two thousand pounds spachie to be paid to the said court or their successors as witness our hands and seals this February 11 1782. Wheras the condition of the above obligation is such that if the above bound Julyan Aven and Zachariah Harmon doe well and truly perform the duty of an administrator of Joseph Aven deceased that then the above obligation be void or else to remain in full force and virtue of the Law.
