Jake's family moved to Austin when he was about 9 or 10 where he attended Alamo School and Austin High School[3] graduating in 1939[4]. After 2.5 years of college at Texas A&M[5], he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve on 12/30/1941[6]. He served in Guard detachments in Hawaii and California.
Jake married Margaret Chiles of Austin in 1944 in Austin.[7][8]
He was discharged from the service on 9/19/1945.[6] He resumed dentistry studies at University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston, graduating in 1951[9] and was certified in 1951[10]. He had a dental practice in Austin in room 710 of the Capital National Bank building.
He and Peggy raised two sons and enjoyed vacationing at Port Aransas, Texas and Colorado.[11]
Dr. Avis was fatally injured by an accidental gunshot at home in 1961.[12] He is buried next to his parents in Austin Memorial Park.[13]
