Thomas was born in Woodham Mortimer, the second son of Thomas Edward Aylett, and his wife Anne (Nichols) Aylett. Unlike his father and older brother he did not become a wheelwright, so is an early representative of the generation in this family that broke away into new professions and in general moved to London.
Oddly, his likely GRO births entry [1] seems to be the year following his bap at W-M [2] which according to his police pension record was on the day he was born.[3]
He appears in the 1861 census index age 1 with his family in Woodham Mortimer.
Thomas joined the Metropolitan Police in 1878, when he was stationed at Upper St, Islington [4]
In 1881, he was a Police Constable in Enfield at the Royal Small Arms Factory, the GunPowder Factory, Waltham (on special duty for the War Department) [5]
In the 1901 census he was age 41and living in St Mary Stratford Bow as an Inspector Of Police
In 1904 he was an Inspector at Bow St London
He retired after 26 years service in 1904 [3] and spent some time at Danbury; then he became a sub postmaster at Woodham Mortimer; then moved to Springfield. (Springfield Rd, in Chelmsford?)
During WW1 he was recalled to duty to replace conscripted colleagues and from 1914-18 was an Inspector at Westminster, A Division, covering Parliament.
One of his brothers (Edgar) was also in the Metropolitan Police from 1905, and his eldest son, Clarrie, also joined, making it to Chief Inspector.
He married Emma Crockett from Enfield, whose father also worked at the Small Arms Factory - presumably they met during his posting there.
IN the 1911 census index, he is in Chelmsford with family at 11 QUEENS ROAD, SPRINGFIELD, CHELMSFORD:
