John was likely part of the Petworth Emigration Project. Name: John Ayling Event: Living Year: 1836 Place: Walberton, West Sussex, England Province: Ontario Source: Petworth Emigration Scheme, The: A Preliminary List of Emigrants from Sussex and Neighbouring Counties in England to Upper Canada 1832-1837. Volume/Page: 1. See https://www.petworthemigrations.com/.
John is referenced to and has letters in "The English Immigrant Voices":. See https://www.petworthemigrations.com/petworth-publications-englishvoices.html. For example, when he settles he writes back to to his father and advises: "Never be afraid to come to America. Don't be afraid to come. You will do better here." He also refers to others who seem to have come over from the same village. His passage: 1836, Heber, A1, 441 tons; master Captain Rue; superintendent appointed by the Petworth Emigration Committee: James Marr Brydone; sailed from Portsmouth (Spithead) 28 April 1836; arrived at Quebec 5 June 1836. AYLING.
Here is John's Walberton family group:
Father is probably William Ayling (1781-1864). He in turn was the son of either of two Thomas & Elizabeth Aylings recorded in the parish register.
Thomas Ayling of Slindon & Elizabeth Suter marry in November 1775, so the children baptized before this date are with the other Thomas Ailing & Elizabeth Dean who married in Tortington, Sussex April 17th, 1769. The children born 1776 and later could be with either set of parents. Given that the first Thomas & Elizabeth likely older they probably are listed as deceased in 1808 and 1810 respectively. The second Elizabeth may have been deceased in 1820.
In the second family group I note that William Ayling is a witness with his sister Louisa (Joy) to the marriage of Maria Ayling to James Ewens in 1822. This probably confirms they are siblings. Further, father Thomas, is in the Yapton workhouse with a Thomas and Elizabeth Ayling. Given their ages these were likely the children of son William (1781-1864). Father Thomas would then be the person deceased in 1828, not 1808, but there is a discrepancy in his DOB, stated as 1747 in the Workhouse records and 1740 in the burial. "Q - Quarter Sessions 1 - JUDICIAL 1 - Sessions Rolls W722 - Petworth Quarter Sessions Roll
They are likely his grandchildren born 1812 and 1809. Also: "Q - Quarter Sessions 1 - JUDICIAL 1 - Sessions Rolls W718 - Petworth Quarter Sessions Roll Level Piece Alt Ref No QR/W718/79 Title Folio 79 - Disbursements for United Parishes of Felpham Yapton and Walberton, and list of Paupers Date 22 Dec 1820 Description James Chapman. Governor of Yapton Workhouse. Salary £596 12s 4d
Interestingly, Henry Ayling (1784-1865), a possible brother of William (1781-1864) settled in the Boston area. Henry states he was born in Walberton, Sussex, having arrived in the US in 1802 according to the Massachusetts, State and Federal Naturalization Records, 1798-1950. “Name: Henry Ayling Record Type: Petition Birth Place: Waburter Suffet [sic] Great Britain and Ireland Arrival Date: Oct 1802 Arrival Place: Boston Petition Date: Nov 1813 Petition Place: Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA”
Note that the origins of one of these lines, which likely includes William Ayling (1781-1864) runs back through Robert Ayling of Binsted and then to John Ayling D. 1605 of Tortington. The Sussex Quarterly Sessions Order Books record in 1650 a Robert Ayling, husbandman of Binstead "charged with keeping an unlicenced alehouse".
Returning to John Ayling (1818-1902) his brother Henry Ayling also moved first to Canada around 1840 and then settled in Illinois, USA where they raise their families and where they are both buried.
Finally, we have done YDNA testing of over 20 AYLING surname men, ancestors all over West Sussex. Eleven of us match closely, including a descendant of Henry Ayling. The testing predicts that he and I share an ancestor in common in the 1500s. All 11 testers have an ancestor in common in Thomas Aylyng, living in Easebourne, West Sussex with his father William in 1381AD. There is a genetic and geographical separation between the descendants of Thomas in the early 1400s, with one group settling in parishes to the west such as in Stedham and the other group (mine and the Walberton descendant) settling in parishes to the east, such as in Tillington. Thomas and his father William were likely the great grandson and grandson of Ricro Aeylng, living in Heyshott, West Sussex in 1296AD, one of the first men to take up our surname.
AYLING derives from Hayling Island in Hampshire. This implies we likely landed on the Island post Roman period, and one or more of our ancestors are probably recorded within the 300 people residing on Hayling in the Domesday Book (1086 AD). We are northern European in origin (present day Germany/Norway area) with deeper ancestry via the Yamnaya to the Russian Steppes.
If you happen to be on Ancestry.com, this very large family tree is called "Aylings of Walberton, Sussex Family Tree".
