William was born in 1916 to William Hanes AYRES and his wife, Loatie WELCH.
In 1938, he married Mary Helen COVENTRY. Together they were the parents of three children.

During World War II, William served as a Private in the U.S. Army. After his discharge from the Army, William founded William H. Ayres Inc., employing 15 veterans.
William was a ten-term Republican U.S. Representative from the state of Ohio, serving from 1951-1971.
He passed away in 2000 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
