Norman August Backer was born on 15 January 1901 in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia. He was the eighth child of nine to be born to August Backer and his wife Flora Wegener. ^[1]

He married Amy Ethel Holthorf on 13 November 1926 in Queensland. ^[2]

11 April 1943, Norman enlisted in the Australian Army; Service Number: QX51710 (Q141123)^[3][4]. He was assigned to the 1 Heavy Training Battery later transferring to No 1 Coy (Brisbane), Signals Fixed Defences, attained the rank of Corporal and was discharged on 12 April 1945

Norman August Backer was granted a decree nisi returnable in three months, dissolving his marriage with Amy Ethel Backer on the grounds of her adultery, on 14 November 1950 in the Rockhampton Supreme Court, Rockhampton, Queensland. ^[5]

He passed away aged 73 years, on 16 February 1974 in Stockton, New South Wales^[6], and his ashes were laid to rest in the Newcastle Memorial Park, Beresfield, Newcastle, New South Wales. ^[7]
