bpt 26 Jan 1794, Circular Church, Charleston, SC. Birth: Sep. 29, 1793 Charleston Charleston County South Carolina, USA Death: 1867 Bryan County Georgia, USA
Mary Amelia Louisa Badger Murrow was born September 29, 1793 in Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina, the daughter of Jonathan Badger and Mary Amelia Dorothea Hahnbaum Badger. Her brother was Samuel James Badger. She married Rev. John William Murrow, a Baptist minister, and they had seven children: Mary Amelia Murrow Pate Downs, Rev. William J. Murrow, Oliver H. Murrow, Rev. Joseph Samuel Murrow, Rev. Jonathan Badger Murrow, Elizabeth R. Murrow Van Brackle, and Dr. John Adams Murrow. She and her husband also partly raised two of their grandchildren, Edna Josephine Pate Downs and William James Pate, after their daughter's divorce. In their old age she and her husband lived with their son Dr. John Adams Murrow. She died at age 74 in 1867 in Bryan County, Georgia and is buried at Old Hopeful Cemetery (also known as Hopeful Cemetery or Stevens Grove Cemetery) near Pembroke, Bryan County, Georgia.
Family tradition says one of her grandfathers was given Sullivan Island, near Charleston, South Carolina by King George III. (Sullivan Island, South Carolina, at the entrance to Charleston Harbor, was the largest slave port in North America. It is estimated that nearly half of all African Americans had ancestors that passed through Sullivan Island.)
Mary was the great-granddaughter of the famous 18th-century portrait artist Joseph Badger.
Mary's heritage was Irish. I hope one of her descendents will add her photo to this site.
Thanks so much to Murrow family researchers for much of this information.
