Hamar was the daughter of William Bagley and Agnes Clements. Henry Sr. was the son of Harmon Bagley and Mary Brogdon. They were first cousins.

He married Anna Lena Williams (1824-1901) on 15 September 1846 in Forsyth County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Robert Williams and Elizabeth Daniels.
