Biography

Based on his reported census ages, William Bailey was born between 1760 and 1765. He married Margaret Carter, daughter of John Carter, in the late 1780s. In 1790, his household consisted of one male over sixteen and two females.^[1]

On October 14, 1791, William and Margaret Bailey sold 100 acres on Little River to his brother James Bailey that had originally been granted to their father William Bailey, deceased.^[2]

In 1800, there are two William Baileys enumerated in Laurens District, South Carolina, both on the same page, and it is difficult to determine which is the one who married Margaret Carter.^[3]

In 1810, the William Bailey household consisted of one male over forty-five (William Bailey), one female between twenty-six and forty-five (Margaret Carter Bailey), one female between sixteen and twenty-six, one male between ten and sixteen, one female between ten and sixteen, four males under ten, and three females under ten.^[4]

In 1820, the William Bailey household consisted of on male over forty-five (William Bailey), one female between twenty-six and forty-five (Margaret Carter Bailey), two males between sixteen and twenty-six, two males between ten and sixteen, two female between ten and sixteen, one male under ten, and two females under ten.^[5]

In 1830, the William Bailey household consisted of one male between sixty and seventy (William Bailey), one female between fifty and sixty (Margaret Carter Bailey), two males between twenty and thirty, one female between twenty and thirty, one female between fifteen and twenty, one male between ten and fifteen, and one female between ten and fifteen.^[6]
