John Bailey Jr. Died while a Prisoner of War in Andersonville Prison during The United States Civil War.
John Bailey Jr. enlisted as a Private with the 12th NY Cavalry, Co A. on 15 Aug 1862. He and his brother, Daniel, were mustered into service in Fulton, NY, 19 Nov 1862. They were taken prisoner on 20 Apr 1864 at Plymouth, North Carolina and sent to Andersonville Prison, with George being paroled at Annapolis several months later.
Although Andersonville Prison records specify that John died from disease/chronic diarrhea of an unknown origin, it was alleged in the "History of Oswego..." that John was starved to death while a prisoner at Andersonville.[3] He left behind two dependent sisters and his mother. He was formally discharged due to death 1 Sep 1864.
There are discrepancies in various records (by one day), as to when John Bailey Jr. actually died. National Cemetery Records[4], Find a Grave[5] and Atwater/Barton book[6] record John's death as having taken place on 1 Sep 1864, while the 1865 NY Census supplemental[7] and NY lists of soldiers dying in service record John's death as having taken place on 31 Aug 1864.[8]
John was buried at Andersonville National Cemetery in Macon County, Georgia.[5]
