Biography

Margaret Baillie was born about 1557, the daughter of Sir William Baillie of Lamington and Margaret (Maxwell) Baillie, daughter of Sir Robert Maxwell, 4th Lord Maxwell and Janet Douglas and widow of Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus. ^[1]

On the 20th of February 1577, Margaret Baillie married Edward Maxwell, Commendator Abbot of Dundrennan. He was the son of John Maxwell, Master of Maxwell and Agnes (Herries) Maxwell, 4th Lady Herries of Terregles suo jure, eldest daughter and heiress of William Herries, 3rd Lord Herries of Terregles and his wife Catherine Cunningham, daughter of Cunningham of Blairquhan.^[1]

Following the death of Edward Maxwell on the 29th of September 1598, Margaret Baillie remarried. Her second husband was John Livingston of West Quarter, who was the second son of William Lord Livingston and his wife Agnes Fleming, daughter of William Lord Fleming, and brother of Alexander Earl of Wigton.^[1]

Margaret Baillie and her first husband Edward Maxwell had at least two children:

1. William Baillie who was born as William Maxwell but succeeded as Laird of Lamington. He obtained an Act of Parliament authorizing him to drop the surname of Maxwell, and assume that of Baillie. ^[1]
2. John Maxwell of Newlaw. ^[1]

Margaret Baillie and her second husband John Livingston had several children. ^[1]

Margaret Baillie passed away before the 26th of March 1607. With the death of Margaret Baillie, heiress of Lamington, the main branch of the Baillie family became extinct. ^[1]

Charters

On the 20th of February 1577, her father, Sir William Baillie of Lamington granted a Charter, with consent of Margaret Maxwell his spouse, of the Lands and Barony of Lamington, with the kirk and chapels belonging thereto, in favour of his daughter Margaret Baillie and Edward Maxwell her husband, reserving his own and his wife's liferent of the same, on the 20th and 26th of February, which was confirmed by the Crown on the 2nd of March 1577.^[2]

On WikiTree Agnes (Herries) Maxwell, 4th Lady Herries of Terregles suo jure, is eldest daughter and heiress of William Herries, 3rd Lord Herries of Terregles and his wife Catherine Kennedy.

Other sources have her as the daughter of Catherine Cunningham, daughter of Cunningham of Blairquhan. ^[1]
