Accident Claims Two

A sports car said by police to have been traveling at a high rate of speed went out of control Monday night, slamming into a utility pole, exploding into flames and leaving two native Cumberland Countians dead. State Troop Ed Barnwell identified the victims as James A. Baisley, 39, owner of Baisley's Body Shop on the Cookeville Hwy. in Crossville, and Keith Burgess, 34, Rt. 7 (Dorton Community), Crossville. Authorities stated that Burgess was pronounced dead on arrival at Cumberland Medical Center and that Baisley dued shortly after arriving in the energency room. Both died of massive internal injuries. The one-car accident occured at Parson's Ridge curve on U.S. 70 North, just north of Lester's Grocery, minutes before 6:30 p.m. Monday (14 May 1984). Troopers Barnwell and Sgt. Ted Swafford told the Chronicle at the scene that a 1973 Corvette (I thought it was a 1953) driven by Baisley was traveling south when it suddenly went out of control, sliding thru the curve sideways, striking a utility pole, becoming airborne and landing upside down in a ravine approximately 40 to 50 yards from where the vehicle left the highway. The car's gas tank exploded from the impact but both men were thrown from the vehicle and neither suffered burns. When Cumberland County Ambulance Service attendants and Cumberland County firefighters arrived on the scene; they were first told that someone was trapped in the burning vehicle but soon determined the two men they were treating at the scene were the only occupants of the car. Rescuers were hampered in their efforts to extinguish the blaze by downed, high voltage power lines and the Crossville Fire Department and Cumberland County Rescue Squad were called to bring fire extinguishers to the scene to assist in the rescue attempt. Rescue personnel worked feverously on the scene as a crowd of over 50 people, most blocked from leaving by rescue vehicles, watched the life-saving attempt. The roadway was blocked until shortly after 8 p.m. and workers were unable to clean up the wreckage until Volunteer Electric employees arrived to stop power running through the lines.[1]
