Biography

Samuel Brown Baker was born 4 Jun 1790 in Kentucky or Tennessee to Robert and Rebecca Baker.[1]

Samuel Baker served in the Tennesse Militia in the War of 1812. The index card for the War of 1812 pensions states that his wife was Nancy Akens or Eakins. [2] This card lists several file numbers and Bounty Land numbers. It states that the soldier was a private in Capt Bethel Allen's Co Tenn Militia, that the soldier resided in 1830 in Pike County, Illinois, in 1855 and 1871 in Scotland County, Missouri and that the soldier died in Oct 1872 in Scotland County, Missouri. It also states that the widow resided in Scotland County, Missouri in 1880 and that she died 5 Aug 1880 in Scotland County, Missouri.[3]

Samuel Baker married Nancy Eakin on 11 May 1816 in Nashville Davidson county, Tennessee.[4]

Samuel and Nancy resided in Pike County, Illinois with 1850 with children Ann, Jackson, Samuel D. and Egbert. [5]

The General Land Office online records include an image of the certificate for land granted to Samuel Baker on 10 Jan 1852; this land was for Bounty Warrant #8457 for 80 acres issued to Samuel Baker private in Captain Alen's Company Second Regiment Tennessee Volunteers War of 1812, dated . The 80 acres was in Scotland County, Missouri, township 64 North, Range 12 West, Section 18, the East half of the Northeast quarter.[6][7]

The General Land Office online records include an image the certificate for land granted to Judson Marlow. This was for land from the military warrant #24130 for 80 acres issued to Samuel Baker, Private in Captain Allen's Company Tennessee Volunteers, War 1812 which was assigned to Judson Marlow. The land was granted to Judson Marlow on 10 Nov 1853.[8] [9]

The General Land Office online records include a land patent for public lands which was granted to Samuel Baker on 30 Oct 1857. Since Samuel Baker had a grown son named Samuel Baker, this land could have been granted to the father or the son. 40 acres was granted to Samuel Baker, land located in Scotland County, Missouri, township 64 North, Range 13 West, Section 34, the southeast quarter of the Northwest quarter.[10][11]

In 1860, Samuel and Nancy resided in Jefferson Township, Scotland County, Missouri in the next residence to the family of their son Samuel D Baker, wife Mary and children.[12] In 1870, again Samuel and Nancy resided in Jefferson Township, Scotland County, Missouri next to son (Samuel) David, wife Mary and children.[13]

Samuel Baker died 16 Nov 1872 and was buried in Campground Cemetery, Scotland County, Missouri according to the War of 1812 marker which states: Samuel Brown Baker, PVT Capt. Allen's Co, 1 Regt Tenn Vol Mtd Gunmen, War of 1812, Jun 4 1790, Nov 16, 1872, Battle of New Orleans. Findagrave also has a picture of the original marker, but the writing on the marker cannot be read from the picture.[14]
