Biography

Etheldreda was the daughter of Robert or Thomas Coker of Mappowder, Dorset, born c 1510.[1]

She married Richard Watkyns Vaughan before 1531 and had three sons and two daughters with him.[2] Her eldest son was Polydore, aged 18 at his father's death in Apr 1550. [3]

Richard Watkins Vaughan was living in 1546 when he received a grant and quit claim of property and rents at Temple Cloud formerly belonging to Buckland Priory, [4] but died in Apr 1550.[5]

Etheldreda, widow of Richard Watkyns Vaughan, married John Spencer at some between Apr 1550 when her first husband died, and 1551[6] when he and Ethelrede were plaintiffs in a Chancery Court case (C 1/1270/83), date 1544-1551:

Plaintiffs: John SPENCER and Etheldrede his wife, executrix and late the wife of Richard Watkyns Vaughan of London, prothonotary.

Etheldreda could not have been the mother of John's children (who were born ca 1530) who had their own children in 1560.

The will of John Spencer late of Southmylles dated 20 Dec 1560 requested that he be buried in Blunham next to the body of his late wife Etheldrede.[7]
