I have not researched further into Dan's family line and leave it to more direct descendants to research the original Germanic form of the surname that became "Baker". His widowed mother is living with his sister, Katheryn E Oetzel, in Rochelle, Ogle, Illinois in 1930[1]
Middle name Andrew is from his son's WWII Draft record.
1900 Baker/Backer Family Census
See photo. Dan's father, John, died in 1892. If the information from Mary is correct below, the family came from Germany to Canada and entered the USA in 1883.
Name Marry Backer
Event Place Clark & Gale Townships, Marion, Kansas, United States
See photo. Edna & Dan have moved west to McPherson. Both children are at home. Dan, Edna & Mildred are working in what appears to be their family-owned restaurant.
Event Place McPherson, McPherson, Kansas, United States
See photo and see notes for 1940 on Edna's profile. I believe this is the correct enumeration although the birthplace is off. Dan is listed as the proprietor of a restaurant.
