Biography

Eliza Ann Freelove Baker was born on 1 Jan 1834 in Verona, Oneida County, New York, United States.[1] She was the 2nd child of the 8 children of George B. Baker and Dorcas Taylor Griffen. Her siblings were Martha Ann, Mary Jane, Phebe Griffen, William Henry, Julia, Samuel James, and Flora Elizabeth.[2]

By 1840, the family had moved about 150 miles west to Barre, Orleans County, New York. The birth record of her youngest sibling, Flora Elizabeth, names her birth place as Barre.[3] Family members, including Eliza, fit the ages in one of the two George Baker households in Barre on the 1840 U.S. census.[4] Also, Eliza and her husband, Edwin Hoyt, first lived with Edwin's sister Miranda and husband in Barre.[5] By 1850, the George Baker household had moved just a few miles south to the next county, to Elba, Genesee County, New York.[6]

Marriage

Eliza Ann Freelove Baker married Edwin Hoyt, his 1st wife, 28 Mar 1850,[2] probably in Elba, Genesee County, New York, where Eliza's family were then living. The southern boundary of Barre is shared with the towns of Elba and Oakfield in Genesee County. Elba is where her maternal grandparents and other aunts and uncles had also moved, presumably from Dutchess County, New York, per Martha's Uncle Charles Taylor Griffen's 1882 bio.[7]

Edwin Hoyt was born on 19 Nov 1827 in New York, the son of Levi Hoyt and his wife Hannah Smith.[8]

Per the 1850 census, Edwin and his new bride Eliza first lived in Barre, Orleans County, New York with his sister Miranda and her husband, Hiram Kellogg (his 1st wife).[5]

After that, Eliza and Edwin moved to Elba, Genesee County, living next door to Edwin’s parents, Levi and Hannah, and his brother Orlando, and not far from Eliza's parents in Elba. [9]

After 1860, Eliza's parents, George and Dorcas, and other family members moved 655 miles west to Lyons, Walworth County, Wisconsin. The last time Martha's parents were recorded on the census was the1860 U.S. Census in Elba, Genesee County, New York.[10]

Children

Eliza and her husband Edwin Hoyt had the following children in Elba, Genesee County, New York:

  1. Jennie Hoyt (1854-1917), married Ezra C. Abbott
  2. Adelbert "Bert" Hoyt (1856-1941), married Clara Vickers, widow Mary Belle (Emmons) Gilbert

By 1870, they had moved about 400 miles west from Elba to Johnstown, Barry County, Michigan, where Edwin's brother Leonard and Leonard's wife Sarah Ann, and his sister Miranda and Miranda's husband Hiram Kellogg were living.[11]

They then moved 250 miles farther west to the west side of Lake Michigan, to Lyons, Walworth County, Wisconsin, where family members were also living. [12]

Edwin and Eliza then appear to have moved again from Lyons back to the state of Michigan, as a 1891 newspaper article notes that "Mrs. Eliza Hoyt, of Michigan, is stopping for a time at C.G. Healy’s [the home of her sister Phebe (Baker) Healy in Lyons, Wisconsin].”[13]

Death

Eliza, aged 57, died on 6 Dec 1891, presumably in the state of Michigan, as her obituary notes she died at the home of her son.[1] She was buried in Hudson Cemetery in Lyons, Walworth County, Wisconsin.[14]

After Eliza passed away, Edwin married the widow Lucinda (Phelps) McKay in 1892. [15]

Edwin, aged 78, died on 6 June 1906 in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan. He was buried in Hickory Corners Cemetery, Hickory Corners, Barry County, Michigan,[16] where his brother Leonard and Leonard's wife Sarah Ann, and his sister Miranda and Miranda's husband Hiram Kellogg (who remarried) were buried.
