Birth and Parents

Isaac, the 4th of five sons of Isaac Baldwin and Mary Flagg was born 12 December 1738 at Woburn, Massachusetts.^[1]

Marriage and Children

Isaac married Eunice Jennison, daughter of Robert and Sibilla (Brintnal) Jennison of Natick, Massachusetts on 31 December 1761 at Sudbury, Massachusetts.^[2]Isaac and Eunice were the parents of six children born at Hillsborough County, New Hampshire:

Move to New Hampshire

Isaac Baldwin and his family came to Hillsborough, New Hampshire in 1766, being the 6th family that came into town upon its second settlement. He settled on the farm known now as the "Dutton Place," and he was a carpenter.^[11][12]

Participation in the Battle at Bunker Hill

Isaac had been a comrade with William and John Stark in the company of Rangers commanded by Major Robert Rogers during the French and Indian War. Upon hearing the news of the Battle of Lexington, he collected a band of volunteers and was given command of a company of men attached to Col. John Stark's regiment. As an officer of the First Regiment New Hampshire Volunteers, Captain Baldwin was assigned to cover the retreat of the Massachusetts troops after the British had twice charged Breed's Hill in the battle of Bunker Hill. Isaac was mortally wounded at this battle and was carried from the field by Lt. John McNeil and James Gibson. He died that evening and after his death the bullet that killed him was extracted and returned to his widow as a sad memento of that dire event, which made her a widow and her children fatherless.^[13][14][15]

According to Col. Jeduthan Baldwin's journal, "Isaac Baldwin at the very commencement of the war raised a company of men in Hillsborough, NH, and brought them to Cambridge. While there with his men a tender belonging to the enemy went aground on the Chelsea ferry ways and he went with twelve of his men in open day in the face of the enemy and burned her, after taking out her guns and sails, by throwing a pitchfork of hay on fire in the cabin windows. Having accomplished this he put his men back one by one and himself brought up the rear under the fire of the British fleet and in this way reached their quarters safely with four of his men wounded. He fought valiantly at Bunker Hill and was shot through the breast and died that night. He is said to have loaded and discharged his musket three times after he was wounded. When his men were carrying him off the field he exhorted them to fight saying "that they would win the day, and he would be with them again directly." He died that night."^[16]

Death following Bunker Hill

Capt. Isaac Baldwin died following the battle of Bunker Hill on 17 June 1775 in Charlestown, Massachusetts. He was 37 years of age and left a wife and six children, the youngest less than one month old when Isaac died.^[17][18]His burial location is not certain.
