"Like her father, Anita was impetuous in love. On Jan. 5, 1892, five days shy of her 16th birthday, she secretly married George W. Baldwin on a tugboat outside the Golden Gate. The 25-year-old groom was her father’s cousin, employed as a clerk at the Baldwin Hotel.

" She married a cousin, George Baldwin, and when this marriage was annulled, she wed Hull McClaughery, a young San Francisco lawyer, who was the father of her two children. :Upon divorcing him, she resumed her maiden name of Baldwin.
