Biography

BIRTH:

Caroline was born 2 Dec 1840, daughter of Charles and Sarah (Jones) Baldwin.

MARRIAGE:

She married Elbridge Haynes Howe 30 June 1860 in Mason, New Hampshire.

A record of the marriage of Carrie Baldwin to Elbridge Howe. He's 22 at the time of this marriage; she's 19. Gives her father's name as Charles Baldwin.^[1]

The marriage record for Minnie and Edwin Upton Powers, the name for the mother of Minnie is shown as "Clara," a possible nickname for Caroline.

CENSUS':

1850 US Census of Winchendon, Worcester, Massachusetts, finds this Caroline living with her parents Charles & Betsey Baldwin and at least 4 siblings living in Winchendon, MA. Caroline is 9 yrs old; and born in New Hampshire according to this record.^[2]

The 1865 Massachusetts state census of Leominster, Worcester, Massachusetts finds this Caroline "H." or "N." Howe at the age of 24yrs old and given as born in New Hampshire. She is living there in Leominster, (MA) with her 26yr old husband given as "Albridge" (sic) H. Howe and their 2yr old daughter, Minnie A. Howe.^[3]

1870 US Census has Caroline living with Elbridge Howe and two children, Minnie A Howe (age 7) and Charles E. Howe, (age 2). Has Caroline as 29 yrs old.^[4]

The 1880 US Census of Fitchburg, Worcester, Massachusetts finds this Caroline H. at the age of 38yrs old and given as born in New Hampshire. She is living there in Fitchburg on Green St. with her 42yr old husband, Elbridge H. Howe and their three children; 19yr old given as what appears to read as "Alice" but whom we know to be Minnie; 12yr old Charlie E. and 5yr old Wilbur H.^[5]

The 1900 US Census of Leominster, Worcester, Massachusetts finds this Caroline Howe at the given age of 58yrs old, a widow, born in Massachusetts in December of 1841. She is living there in Leominster at 81 West St. alone. Her son Wilbur and his family consisting of wife Lillian and daughter, Marion are living next door.^[6]

The 1910 US Census of Leominster, Worcester, Massachusetts finds this Caroline Howe at the age of 68yrs old and given as a widow, born in New Hampshire. She is living there in Leominster at 285 Merriam Avenue in the household of her 35yr old son, Wilbur Howe. The household also includes Wilbur's 33yr old wife, Lillian and Wilbur and Lillian's 1yr old daughter, Marion.^[7]

MRS CAROLINE M. HOWE, 80, DEAD AT LEOMINSTER

Leominster, May 18--Mrs. Caroline M. Howe, aged 80, widow of Eldridge M. Howe, and president of the Women's Relief Corps, died today of shock. She leaves two sons, Wilbur and Charles Howe. It is believed, was the oldest relief corps president in New England.^[8]
