Obituary

Rose L. Greene, longtime nurse

Rose L. Greene loved babies and small children and made them her vocation early, and later, in her life.

A former nurse, Mrs. Greene, 86, of Florence, died Friday afternoon at Woodspoint Geriatric Care Center, Florence.

Mrs. Greene and her husband, Gilby Greene, were married for 58 years. He served for many years on Florence City Council and is a retired principal of Turkeyfoot Junior High School.

A native of Georgetown who was reared in Owen County, Mrs. Greene studied nursing at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, where she also worked, said her daughter, Jane Piercefield. Her mother also worked at Children's Hospital in Cincinnati, and in Frankfort, Mrs. Piercefield said, and after taking off for several years to be a mother to her own children, she returned to nursing at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North.

"Children and babies were a specialty. It's what she loved. She worked with newborns and with premature babies," said Mrs. Piercefield.

Her mother's decision to leave home and attend nursing school in Ohio was something of a departure from the norm of her time, Mrs. Piercefield pointed out.

Mrs. Greene was very active over the years within the Florence Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school for 30 years, her daughter said, and was also a longtime member of the Womens' Missionary Union and the Ladies' Circle.

Other survivors include a daughter, JaNelle Lopresti of Edgewood; a son, Gary Greene of West Bloomfield, Mich.; a sister, Louise Rose of Owenton; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Mausoleum, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the church, 283 Main St., Florence 41092, or Alzheimers Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati 45203.
