James Bales was born in Appalachia, in Tennessee.
James Bales was born in Sevier County.

James was born in 1869 in Tennessee, United States, to Caleb Bales and Elizabeth Reagan[1].

In 1893 he married Emma F. Ogle in Sevier County, Tennessee[2]. She died in 1902.

By 1910 he had remarried[3]. His second marriage ended sometime before 1930[4]. He died in 1939 in Sevier County (residence: Gatlinburg)[1], and is buried there in the White Oak Flats Cemetery[5].
