Martin was born 22 Oct 1840 in New York, United States. His parents were William H. Ballard and Harriet Nichols, both born in New York.^[1]

Martin, 23, enlisted in the Union Army as a Private in Company I, 81st Regiment, New York Infantry on 7 Nov 1861 and was mustered in on 25 Nov 1861 for 3 years. Mustered out 26 Nov 1864 at Elmira, New York.^[2][3] The 81st Infantry was organized at Albany, New York. The Regiment was engaged in many Battles and Sieges, including: Siege of Yorktown, and Battles of Williamsburg, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Appomattox Court House.^[4]

Martin married twice. His first wife was Phoebe J. Marsh in about 1865, and his second was Martha J. Galon (born in Ohio in about 1862) on 18 Dec 1902 in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California.^[5]

Martin was a member of Pasadena, California’s John F. Godfrey Post of the G.A.R. ^[6]

Martin was registered to vote in Compton, California in 1888^[7] and 1890^[8], and in Pasadena, California in 1892^[9], 1896.^[10]

He passed away 24 Dec 1930 in San Gabriel, Los Angeles, California, United States and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California.^[1][6]

Martin was survived by 3 daughters, Mrs. A.M. Halley of Oakland, California, Mrs Fred Foster of Elsinore, California, and Mrs J.E. Dishman of San Gabriel, California.
