TRACY BALLARD, born likely at Dutchess County, New York, 30 Nov 1756[1] son of Peleg and Mercy (Tracy) Ballard;[2][3] Tracy died at Carmel, New York, 1 Jan 1829 and is interred at Mt. Carmel Church Cemetery;[4] married about 1782 (based on birth of first known child in 1783), MERCY COLE, born at Coles Mill, New York, about 1757 daughter of Elisha and Hannah (Smalley) Cole;[5] Mercy died at Carmel, 8 Feb 1826[6] and is interred at Mt. Carmel Church Cemetery.[7]
Tracy Ballard and Mercy Cole resided in Carmel, New York where they kept a farm. Tracy fulfilled civic functions in the town including overseer of the poor and grand juror.[8]
In 1790, the household of Tracy Ballard was enumerated at Frederickstown, New York with six persons: one male 16 and over, two males under 16, and three females.[9] In 1800, the household of Tracy Ballard was eight persons at Carmel: one male 26 to 44, one female 26 to 44, two males under 10, two males 16 to 25, and two females 10 to 15.[10]
On 12 April 1827, Tracy Ballard of Carmel, in consideration of the sum of $3,355, conveyed to Zeba Ballard a 122-acre tract in Carmel with all the appurtenances.[11]
Tracy Ballard served in the Seventh Regiment of Dutchess County Militia during the Revolution the regiment commanded by Col. Henry Ludenton.[12]
In his will written 17 March 1826 (allowed 23 January 1829), Tracy Ballard of Carmel bequeathed to son Selah Ballard five hundred dollars and five hundred dollars to son Zeba Ballard. The heirs of son Joseph Ballard deceased receive five hundred dollars to equally divide who are Eli Ballard, Alanson Ballard, and Joseph Ballard. The heirs of son Benjamin Ballard receive five hundred dollars to equally divide: Zilla Travis, Lewis Ballard, Enos Ballard, and Jackson Perry Ballard. Two daughters Jane Hopkins Jane Ballard wife of Joseph Hopkins and Fanna Wilson Fanna Ballard wife of Jeremiah Wilson receive five hundred dollars to equally divide. His two daughters also receive the household furniture and their mother’s wearing apparel. Selah Ballard, Zeba Ballard, and Jeremiah Wilson were named executors. Added is a note that he wishes his estate both real and personal to be sold as soon as convenient following his decease. The will was witnessed by William H. Sloat and Enos Hopkins.[13]
Tracy Ballard and Mercy Cole were parents of six children.[14]
