Biography

Margaret was born about 1562, the daughter of William and Margaret Bankes of Huggon House, Rathmell, Giggleswick, Yorkshire. She is mentioned in her father's will 8 December 1576, and is twice listed after her sister Agnes so is presumably the younger: "... also I gyve to my two daughters agnes and margaret there childs porcons of my goods .... The rest of my pte of goods not bequithed my debtts and all other dues paid I gyve to my wyfe and my foure children viz. Xpofer, Robt agnes and margaret equallie to be devided amongst".[1][2]

She married Christopher Armitstead on 19 June 1586 at Giggleswick: "Christoferus Armitsteade & Margareta Bankes".[3] They had a daughter Elizabeth baptised 23 July 1587, who is mentioned in the will of her uncle Robert Bankes: "I also give to Elizabeth Armitstead my sister’s daughter 20s".[4]

Margaret probably died in 1598 and was buried at Giggleswick on 20 January 1597/1598: Margareta ux. Christoferi Armitstead = Margaret wife of Christopher Armitstead,[5] but there was another Christopher Armitstead who also had a wife Margaret.

Research Notes

Birth date - Margaret, Agnes, and Robert were all probably under 21 at the time of their father's will 1576, as their elder brother Christopher was asked to "help and succour" them until they could fend for themselves. There is a baptism of a Margaret Bankes on 17 September 1560: Margaret Bankes, father left blank. But there is an Agnes Banke daughter of William only a few months later 11 December 1560 so they cannot both be correct. Have taken the Agnes baptism to be correct as it mentions the father, so Margaret is probably later.
