Biography

Cornet John Bankhead served in the United States Army in the War of 1812

John was born in 1780. He was the son of James Bankhead of Union County, South Carolina. John was named in his father's will of February 1798. He and his brother Hugh were given their father's old plantation on Broad River, which was already in their possession.[1]

John served in the War of 1812. He held the rank of cornet, the most junior grade of commissioned officer.[2]

John married Jane Watson Mccurdy in 1797.[3] In the 1820 census John was in Union County, South Carolina, United States.[4]

John was in a land record on 1 October 1823 in Lamar County, Alabama, where he purchased the west half of Section 4 in Township 14 South, Range 16 West.[5] John owned land shown on a plat map in Northern Alabama.[6]

In the 1830 census John was in Marion, Alabama.[7]

John died on 1 March 1842 and was buried in Redus Cemetery, Moscow, Lamar County, Alabama, United States.[8] John was also mentioned on a memorial in Mulberry Springs Cemetery, Sulligent, Lamar County, Alabama, United States with a death date of 1842.[9]
