Biography

Alexander Bankhead is a part of US Black heritage.

Alexander Bankhead was born in 1879 in Utah Territory, son of Nathan Bankhead (~1828–1901) and Susan Jane Powell (1845–1931).^[1]

In 1880, Alexander was living in household of Nathan Bankhead (55 years) in Wellsville, Cache with his parents, Nathan (55 years) and Nathan (5 years); his siblings, Susan (35 years), and H. William (10 years); and C. Hannah Bankhead (9 years), and Alexander Bankhead (1 years). ^[1]

The family moved to Los Angeles County, California. At age 15, Alex was arrested on Saturday, 8 September 1894, in a group of twelve Black men caught in a gambling raid on Ed Meyer's joint on East First near Wilmington.^[2] Alexander and a coworker were arrested by Detective Hawley and charged with a burglary committed on 14 November 1894 at the residence of John Thill at Sunnyside. The Los Angeles Times wrote: "They were running an express wagon, and carried a trunk out to the Sunnyside ranch, and, after the delivery of the baggage, coolly ransacked the house, and made off with a watch."^[3] The arraignment was a full month later on 27 December 1894 with Judge Smith in Department One. Alexander entered a guilty plea and was committed to the Whittier State School (later the Fred C. Nelles Youth Correctional Facility) for the remainder of his minority. ^[4] He was convicted by Judge Smith and a jury in Department One of burglary in the second degree on Saturday, 5 January 1895,^[5] and sentenced on Monday to the Preston School of Industry at Ione, California for a three-year term.^[6][7][8] The Preston Youth Correctional Facility is almost 400 miles from Los Angeles.

In 1900, Alexander (20) was living in household of Geo W Lynch (50 years) in Los Angeles, Los Angeles with his siblings, Anna Lynch (50 years), and Anna J Lynch (25 years); and Geo W Lynch (50 years), Jr. (28 years), Alice Lynch (22 years), May C Lynch (7 years), Hulburt C Lynch (3 years), Edward Drotning (22 years), Clifford G Smith (21 years), Fay Smith (21 years), John McNaugh (45 years), Alex Banschead (19 years), E L Crew (32 years), Sam? W Phillip (40 years), Henry Smith (39 years), Fannie Walsh (24 years), and Key Am (30 years). ^[9]

Alexander married Olivia about 1900–1901. Alexander was in a directory in 1905 with a home at 2414 McPherson in the newly developed El Sereno neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, United States.^[10] In 1910, Alexander (30) was living in Los Angeles Assembly District 71, Los Angeles with his wife Olivia Bankhead.^[11]

Alexander died on February 21, 1916, aged 36.^[12]
