James 'Jim' Thomas Bannister was born on November 11, 1843, in Alabama, United States.[3] He was the son of Edward Bannister and Lucy Newsom. He married Nancy Louvisa 'Lou' Cotton on March 31, 1866, in Talladega, Alabama.[4] They had at least eight children; those known are:
He died on February 14, 1924, in Itasca, Texas,[10] at the age of 80, and was buried there.
