Florence E Marvel (née Barber) was born on 30 May 1874 in Ward, Allegany, New York to Harrison C Barber and Emma Cornelia Babbitt, the second of two children. After her mother died two weeks later, her father took his son and Florence was raised in the Town of Alfred by her maternal grandfather, Civil War veteran Pvt. Henry James Babbitt.
She passed away at the Tate Nursing Home in Wellsville, Allegany, New York on 19 July 1959 and was buried two days later in Alfred Rural Cemetery.
