SAMUEL BARKER, b. at Andover, 11 Jan 1742/3[1] son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Farnum) Barker; Samuel d. at Andover, 5 Dec 1823;[2] m. at Andover, 4 May 1766,[3] his second cousin, SUSANNAH FOSTER, b. at Andover, 17 Dec 1747 daughter of Joshua and Mary (Barker) Foster;[4] Susannah d. at Andover, 7 Sep 1822.[5]
Samuel Barker was a farmer in Andover, also owned interest in a cider mill, and was a carpenter/joiner.He is likely the Samuel Barker of Andover who served as Sergeant in the company of Capt. Nathaniel Lovejoy and “marched at the alarm” on 19 April 1775. He was credited with 3 ½ days service.[6] Samuel also served on a committee to raise soldiers for the war effort.[7] [8]
On 19 March 1801, Samuel Barker, yeoman of Andover with his wife Susanna, in consideration of $500, conveyed to Nathan Barker a tract of land of 2 ½ acres in Andover with buildings. On 1 August 1804, Samuel with wife Susanna, inconsideration of $4,000, conveyed to Joshua Barker several tracts of land in Andover and Boxford containing 175 acres. On 11 August 1819, Joshua leased these same properties to his honored mother and father, Samuel and Susanna Barker, for payment of $100. On 1 August 1804, Samuel and Susanna, in consideration of $2,000, conveyed to Nathan Barker several tracts in Andover. On 16 August 1819, Nathan leased his property to his honored parents for $100.[9]
In his will written 1 September 1822, Samuel Foster bequeathed to his three granddaughters Elisabeth Barker, Mehitable Barker, and Lydia Barker children of son Joshua deceased four pieces of land lying in Boxford. These granddaughters also receive his share in the Boxford library, the floor pew in the meeting house, the horse shed at the meeting house, chaise, riding sleigh, and harnesses, and all the farming tools. They also receive the swine and horse. Daughter-in-law Ruth Barker widow of Joshua is to have use and improvement of the library, pew, chaise, etc. during her widowhood. The granddaughters receive the clock that stands in the east foreroom and other specific bequests to each. Daughter-in-law Sarah Barker widow of son Nathan receives one good cow. Daughter Susanna wife of Nathan Foster receives the land known as the Governor place of about thirteen acres. She also receives $600 and one undivided fourth part of the stock animals. She also receives one-fourth of the cider, one-third of cattle yokes and yoke irons, and one-half the books. Daughter Mary wife of John Long receives the land known as Wade’s neck, $800, and an undivided fourth part of the stock animals, and the other bequests as Susanna. Granddaughter Susanna Barker receives $250. Grandson Jedediah Holt Barker receives the carpenter and joiner tools, his share in the cider mill excluding the house over the mill, and the remainder of the real and personal estate. Grandson Jedidiah is responsible to pay the debts and legacies, to cut and deliver wood to his mother and his sister Susanna, and he is named executor. The following heirs signed agreement to the terms of the will on 15 December 1823: Nathan and Susanna Foster, John and Mary Long, Sarah Barker, Ruth Barker,[10] and Amos Kimball signing as guardian for Susan, Elisabeth, Mehitable and Lydia Barker. Real estate was valued at $3,453 which included 132 acres of land divided over twelve tracts. Personal estate was $3,837.96 and included $2,828.32 in cash and other securities.[11]
Susannah Foster and Samuel Barker were parents of five children born at Andover.
