William Barker (1846-?) was born in early 1846 in Urswick, Lancashire
[1]
and christened in the neighbouring Dalton in Furness on the 8th March 1846. He was the son of William Barker, who was a malt maker at that time, and Margaret Sharp.
[2]
In 1851 the family were in Great Urswick and his father was now an iron miner.
[3]
but by 1861, their mother had died shortly after childbirth in 1860 so by the 1861 census, several of the older children were spread out. Some with relatives but William was possibly in the neighbouring Egton cum Newland parish apprenticed to a wheelwright there.
[4]
In 1870 he married in Whitehaven district, to a widow, Mary Ann Gaitskell,
[5]
who had already had at least one child, James, by him, born earlier that year.
The child was registered as Gaitskell but would become known as Barker subsequently. It is also possible that the previous child, Mary Hannah Gaitskell was his also as she was registered as illegitimate.
In 1871 they were living on a farm called Benfold at Gosforth in Whitehaven district.
[6]
but this arrangement does not last long. Another son was born there in 1873 but by 1881 they had moved back down to Dalton in Furness and William was now an iron ore miner. This son was registered as William Ferdinand but shown as Thomas in the 1881 census
[7]
Not sure what became of him.
