Biography

Joyse Barker was born probably in Nottinghamshire, England before 1596 to make her aged at least 16 years at her marriage.

She married William Frost, a cordwainer at the church of St Mary Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England on 20 April 1612. [1]
The same day [the xx Aprill] Will'm Froste & Joyse Barker maryed

William and Joyse were parents of eight children, three of whom died as children. Apart from the eldest son Daniel, all the other children were baptised at the church of Nottingham St Peter:

  • St Mary 17 Jan 1612/3 "January 1612: The xvij day Daniell the sonne of Will'm Froste baptized'
  • St Peter 24 Nov 1614 "Elizabetha filia Gulihelmi Frost bapt. esset vicessimo quarto Nov'bris
  • St Peter 5 January 1616/7 "1616: Marye the doughter of Will'am ffroste Christened 5 January"
  • St Peter 27 December 1618 "1618: Lydia the doughter of W'm ffroste Christened 27 Decem'r"
  • St Peter 15 October 1620 (1 has a double curl and looks like a 2) "1620: Josua the sonne of W'm ffroste Christened 15 October" St Peter "Burialles AD 1624: Joshua ye sonne of William Frost buried the 20 January"
  • St Peter 8 December 1622 "1622: Abraham the sonne of W'm ffroste Christened 8 December"
  • St Peter 8 October 1624 "1624: Samuell the sonne of William Frost baptised 3 October" St Peter "Burialles AD 1631: Samuell ye son of William Frost ye 2 day of June"
  • St Peter 4 June 1626 "1626: Susanna ye daughter of William Frost the 4 of June" St Peter "Burialls AD 1626: Susanna the daughter of William Frost ye 10 of June"

Joyse was buried at Nottingham St Peter on 23 May 1634: [2]
Burialles AD 1634: Joyse ye wife of William Frost the 23 day of May

Research Notes

This Joyse Barker is very unlikely to be the daughter of John Barker of Nayland, Suffolk. John had a daughter Joice who already has her own profile. If it transpires that this Joyse is the same person, she can be merged in. In the meantime she will be detached.
References to the baptism of a Joyce Barker of Neen Savage, Shropshire also removed.

John Barker, Clothier of Nayland, Suffolk did have a daughter named Joyse who he mentioned in his will of 1588. However it is very unlikely to be the same Joyse who married William Frost in Nottingham which is 140 miles away. There is already a second Joice in this list of John's children. I suggest disconnecting Joyse (Barker) Frost from the Nayland family.

This profile of Joyse Barker the wife of William Frost of Nottingham (not William Frost of Stanstead, Suffolk) seems to be conflated with several other Joyse Barkers from other locations. The PGM are looking at the current William Frost profile which is agreed to be a conflation of a William Frost of Stanstead, Suffolk and William Frost of Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, and I will be creating a new profile for the William Frost of Nottingham (which will be managed by the England Project to prevent a remerge back into the Stanstead profile).

I have the sources for the marriage of William and Joyse in Nottingham, and her burial, and the baptisms of some of the listed children. It would seem that Joyse was of Nottingham rather than Suffolk, or as it says in her bio, of Neen, Shropshire. If there is any new sourced information which should be added to this profile, please do join the conversation.

A merge has been proposed between this profile and Barker-81 which I have approved on Barker-81 side. However, there is a 22 year birth year difference between the 2 profiles that I ask to be resolved before this merge is completed or to accept the birth year of 1584, as listed on Barker-81, when completing this merge. Thank you.
