Jethro Barker is the son of John Barker and Letitia Drew. [1] At the time of his birth, his father owned land on Chipoakes creek in Surry County, Colony of Virginia.
According to descendants, Jethro married Mary Briggs in 1668 in Sussex County, Virginia.[citation needed]
His father died after 1678. At a Charles City County court held the 4th of April 1679, "Jethrow" Barker, orphan, complains of abuse by his mother-in-law (step-mother) & prays that he may choose his guardian, he being of age to do so. He chooses Wm. Sanders which was approved.[2] At age 14 an orphan could choose their guardian which suggests Jethro was at least age 14, but under age 21 in 1679. At a court at Westover on the 5th of Jan 1690, a judgment was granted to Joel Barker against Jno. Good of Martins Brandon Parish for 8,000 lbs of tobo., due from Good to Barker by will of Jno. Barker, dec'd, father of said Joel, Good having intermarried with Adm'x of dec'd. It is ordered that on receipt of tobacco, said Joel and Jethroe Barker sign a discharge therefore.[3]
Jethro Barker of Southwarks Parish county of Surry, Planter, and Mary, his wife, sold to William Killinworth 60 acres of land lying on the south side of Otter dam swamp which bounded on Jethro's line on the 1st day of September 1690.[4]
On the 28th of April 1693, John Barker of Southwarke Parish in Surry County sold 100 acres of land to Joel Barker which was part of a patent for 261 acres granted to Jethro Barker on the 20th day of 8br 1689 on the otterdam swamp. Mary wife to Jethro Barker relinquished her right of dower on the same day, and Jethro Barker appeared in court and acknowledged the sale.[5] It appears John Barker on the deed was the son of Jethro rather than his brother since he was selling Jethro's land.
On the 3rd day of November 1702, Walter Cotton and his wife, Elizabeth, sold 157 acres of land to John Johnson which was part of 314 acres patented by Walter Cotton and Thomas Cotton on the 20th of 8br [October] 1688.[6] The deed shows 314 acres of land being equally divided by agreement of Mr. Jno Barker and Mr. Jethro Barker at the request of Walter Cotton and Thomas Cotton. Jethro Barker was also one of the witnesses to the sale. Jethro Barker, Senior, John Johnson, and Grace Barker were witnesses to the Last Will and Testament of Thomas Cotton written on the 26th of February 1718, and recorded in Surry County.[7]
On the 25th day of January 1740, Jethro Barker of the Parish of Albemarle, county of Surry set his hand and seal to his Last Will and Testament naming these legatees:
The will was proven at a court held the 15th day of March 1747 which suggests he died in 1747.
Documented children of Jethro Barker born to Mary were:
Before merge of this profile this information was listed on Barker-6269 under heading Will: "6 Oct. 1747 , Jethro Barker of Albermarle Parish to his son,John Barker, for love and affection,165 acres on southwest side of main Blackwater Swamp( being the tract of land granted to said jethro Barker on April 01,1717) Wit:John Barker,Hugh Ivey,Drury Barker.[9]" The will only stated the plantation whereon he lived. Deed Book #5, p. 141 does not have a deed for John or Jethro Barker, and the book is for years 1815-1818.
