Æneas Barkly, was born at Resolis, Ross-shire, Scotland in 1768 and baptised on the 13th of April, the fourth son of Alexander Barkly, merchant of Cromarty and Christian Urquhart, daughter of Laird of Mounteagle.[1]
Became sugar merchant in London with Graham and Davidson (from 1807 Davidson & Barkly), was made his father's heir for paying debts of family farm, and inherited Mounteagle Estate, Scotland following the Laird's death.
Married Susannah Louisa Ffrith, daughter of a Jamaica coffee planter, at Camberwell, Surrey, England on the 9th of January 1805.[2]
He was a London merchant, partner with Henry Davidson and Duncan Davidson (both of whom q.v.) in Davidson's & Barkly (q.v), were awarded compensation for claims across the Caribbean by the British Government after the abolition of Slavery.
Died suddenly on the 17th of August 1836.
Æneas BARKLY age 67, of Highbury Grove, Islington was buried on the 25th of August 1836, in the North gallery of St Mary Islington, in vault beneath the chapel.
Obituary of Sir Henry Barkly of Monteagle Ross-shire, 'ruined by the Parliamentary legislation of 1838, left his family, on his death, in a financially embarrassed position'. Henry Barkly went to Demerara 'for the purpose of improving his property'.
