Biography

Evelyn (Barlow) Williams was born in Appalachia, in West Virginia. See Appalachia Project.

Evelyn Barlow Williams, age 77, of Oak Hill, died last week in Raleigh County. Her car had been caught on the edge of a country road as she tried to turn and she is believed to have died in a fall as she walked from the car. Mrs. Williams was a retired teacher and a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church. She and her husband had lived in Akron, Ohio, for many years and retired to Oak Hill. She was born at Huntersville March 10, 1923, the daughter of the late Samuel Isaac and Mabel Goldie Wagner Barlow. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by three sisters, Madeline McComb, Juanita Patterson, and Myrtle Adkins. Surviving her are her husband, John Hunter Williams, Sr., of Oak Hill; a daughter, Millie Petersen, of Oak Hill; a son, J. Hunter Williams, Jr., of Alexandria, Virginia; two grandchildren; a brother, Maynard Barlow, of New York State; and three sisters, Lucille Burns, of Marlinton, Nell Shrader and Louise McNeel, both of Hillsboro. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at VanReenen Funeral Home by the Rev. Jim Shepherd, with burial in the Arbovale Cemetery.
