He was a graduate of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Served as secretary to Dr. Denny, president of the university, to pay for his education. He was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity.
He worked as manager of the U-Drive-It Company for his brother Clarence, in Savannah, GA, Louisville, KY and Richmond, VA (where he retired).[1]
Horace Barnard, age 105, of Richmond, died Tuesday, December 17, 2002. Originally from Ozark, Alabama and a graduate of the University of Alabama, where he was a Phi Kappa Sigma, Horace came to Richmond in 1936 to open the U-Drive It Company, a car and truck rental company which he operated until his retirement in 1992. In 1986, he moved into Westminster Canterbury.
He was predeceased in 1985 by his wife, Mary Dunklin Barnard of Selma, Alabama. He is survived by a son, Robert Dowling Barnard of Richmond; and a daughter, Mary Stoddard Barnard Trigg of Hardings, Northumberland County, Virginia. Grandchildren are Robert Dowling Barnard Jr., William Robertson Trigg, and Edward Barnard Trigg, all of Richmond, John Lewis Barnard of Denver, Colo., Mary Alston Trigg Sachs of Fredericksburg, Susan Reid Trigg of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, and Mary Cassell Barnard FitzHugh of Charlotte, N.C. Eight great-grandchildren survive him. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, the Kiwanis Club of Richmond, and The Country Club of Virginia.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday in Hollywood Cemetery.
